A Personal Guide to The Baltic

Ueckermunde

Ueckermunde lies on the southwest corner of the Stettiner Haff, which is divided between Germnay and Poland. There is a Polish guard boat moored on the border, and it is an extremely good idea, if you coming from the Polish side, to have cleared Immigration at your port of departure. There is a Border Guard post in Ueckermunde, just before you get to the town quay.

On the German side, the Stettiner Haf lies on the southern end of the Peenestrom - a picturesque if shallow channel which runs up to the Greifswald Bodden.

The approach needs to be taken with care. The haf is shallow, and the channel isn't wide. In the shallow areas, there are a great number of fishing nets tethered to stakes. KEEP CLEAR!

The entrance to the channel is straight but narrow: there is a sign saying one way traffic for boats over 10m [get out your tape measure first].

berthing and facilities

Just inside the river, there is a big new marina/hotel complex with a large number of box moorings. Many of them seemed empty. Apparently, however, it is a long way from there to shops etc.

A little further down, the box moorings begin. These belong to local yacht clubs etc, and some are rather small and narrow. The continue for quite a distance down the river. I think it is no exaggeration to say that there are more privately owned yachts in Ueckermunde than I saw in all the Polish Baltic harbours put together!

Finally you arrive at the ferry terminal, and here the river bends round into the town quay. The Border Guard post is just beyond the ferries on the right. There is now a long straight quay which has recently been rebuilt, leading to a lifting road bridge. You can tie up on the quay. There is electricity, but no loos or showers. There is water, but the fittings on the taps are much larger than usual.

From the quay, it is five minutes walk into the town. Shopping is reasonable. However, to make life easier, just beyond the town centre is a Lidl supermarket and an Internet café.

Beyond the road bridge is a boatyard. The box moorings are very typical of those all along the river.
