A Personal Guide to The Ports of the Channel

Nicholas Hill

Lymington

Lymington is straightforward enough to find and enter: the main hazard are the ferries to and from Yarmouth.

The town is attractive enough, if a little selfconsciously 'quaint'. There are several chandlers, and shopping in the High Street, which is easy to get to, is good.

Finding It

Very straightforward. The masts of the yachts in the Yacht Haven are visible miles away! Find the entry marker 'Jack in the Basket' (Fl R 2s) and follow the channel. There is a conspicuous hut on stilts near the entrance.

Getting In

The channel is well marked, although there is a loop in it - follow the markers and you'll have no problem. The photo below shows the entrance channel as seen from the top deck of the ferry:

Hazards

Can be shallow at low water - lots of moorings - and beware the ferries.

Berthing

There are 2 marinas plus the Town Quay, which may be busy - rafting up is de rigeur.

Facilities

Excellent at the marinas, but the Town Quay is limited. The High Street is a short walk, and shopping here is good.
