A Personal Guide to The Ports of the Channel

Paimpol

finding it

Paimpol lies between Isle de Brehat and L'Ost Pic. The harbour lies some way in: from deep water to the east to the breakwater is about 5 miles. If coming from the east, the leading line is about 0.9 miles north of L'Ost Pic. From the north there are various offshore hazards such as the Plateau des Echaudes and La Horaine. You need to find the Chenal de Brehat, which is fairly narrow. Coming from the Trieux, there are various inshore passges for the confident.

getting in

Once on the leading line, keep heading in and the breakwater becomes obvious. Paimpol is tidal, and the bay dries out some way, so you are best going in about HW-2.

hazards

Beware oyster beds in the bay, but other than that, quite straightforward. If the tide is only just coming up, keep checking the depth. If you ground on a falling tide, you're going to be there some time!

berthing

The lock is around the other side of the breakwater: once through the lock, there are two basins, and you may well be directed to one or the other. The inner basin is closer to the town. Shelter in both is excellent.

facilities

Usual loos and showers. The town is built around the docks, and almost everything you might need is only a few yards walk. The town is pleasant and attractive.
